Best laptop for Storyline and other ID tools/software

Mar 27, 2018

I am currently in the market to purchase a new laptop.  What are you guys using and loving? Any recommendations as far as the best specs for ID work? Portability, space, and ports are high on my list of preferences. When working from home, I currently connect my laptop to my two 24 inch monitors through a USB 3.0 port and an HDMI cable but would prefer to switch to using a docking station. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like I might need a new laptop too.  Have a 13.5 inch and I can't design off of it. Works for mininmal stuff and client visits,  but not sure how big I have to go to get all the sidebars visible on the screen easily in storyline.  Was looking at 15.5 inch.  Anyone know if that works?  I'd love to be able to take my work on the road to a beach-like location!!!  I'd also love to do a docking station for when I'm working from home.

Hi Twanica,

I use an HP ZBook Studio G4 with a 15 inch screen, 1920 x 1080 resolution, Intel Xeon 3GHz processor, 16 Gb RAM and a 500 Gb Solid State Drive, running Windows 10 Pro.

This is a higher spec than required for the Articulate software suite, but the extra grunt is due to the simulation work that I do. That said, there are a number of things I would recommend:

1.  a minimum of 8Gb of RAM is preferable. Remember, when you are developing courseware, you may be on-line using Rise and also have Storyline and perhaps Photoshop running at the same time -- you can never have too much RAM !

2.  a Solid State Drive just makes things load so much quicker.

3.  a 15 inch screen is absolutely fine.

4.  the HP ZBook Studio is an excellent laptop. It comes in a range of different models (less RAM, different processors etc).

For me, the main advantage of this computer over other laptops I have owned is the sheer speed, which is always a calming influence when you spend many hours in front of the screen. From pressing the start button to being logged into E-Learning Heroes is less than 45 seconds and that includes logging into the laptop in the first place. Obviously the processor has a lot to do with that, but the SSD make a huge difference as well.

I should also add that the ZBook comes with a range of ports including HDMI, 3 x USB and 2 x Thunderbolt, which gives you plenty of options for docking.

Hope this helps.
