blurry images with player size set to scale to browser
Jun 02, 2017
Hi there,
TL;DR: I'm forced to choose between blurry images with a normal browser launch window or sharp images and a broken launch window after upgrading to 360. Details below:
I've been having an issue with blurry images in the published output now that I've upgraded to storyline 360. I didn't see this ins Storyline 1 or 2.
I've identified this to be dependant upon the player size settings under player properties. If I choose "scale player to fill browser window" I get blurry imagery. If I choose "Lock player to optimal size" the images are sharper.
The problem I have with "Lock player to optimal size" is that my browser size settings are having no effect on how the course is launched. My story size setup is 920 x 690, but when launching the course it tries to load in a 720 by 540 window with scroll bars around the edges. Choosing "resize browser to fill screen, resize browser to optimal size, and display at user's current size" have no effect.
Any ideas on a solution are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi David,
We have some general recommendations for working with the best images and media here.
You mentioned using "lock player" but what setting are you using for the browser size as noted here? Also, are you seeing this blurriness in a certain browser? We've seen Chrome display the HTML5 a bit blurrier than Flash or other browsers - so that's something our team is looking into.
Let me know if there is anything else I can help with!
If using HTML5 output, but window sizing does not appear to function. It only functions if I use a launch page. However, if I have a course with a launch page in my LMS, clicking the launch button, creates a whole slew of errors. I suspect the LMS is blocking the launch button's calls.
Hi Bill,
What version of Storyline are you using? What browser(s) were you viewing the HTML5 output in? Could you share a bit more about how the window sizing didn't change?
It could be that the Learning Management System (LMS) you're using is forcing Storyline to display inside their frame. What LMS are you using? Have you also looked at testing it in SCORM Cloud to see how it behaves there? That's a standard for LMS testing, and this article will walk you through getting started there.
I am using Storyline 360. I have been using a Chrome browser. If I publish a file with an output of HTML5 only, set the player setting to "Resize browser to fill screen". I have my LMS set to open a new window when launching and not to use its own frame. If I publish with a flash setting the resize works properly. I not yet tested in SCORM Cloud.
Just launched via SCORM Cloud with the launch button and ran into the same issue - after closing the course the Articulate launch button window is visable. When I click that button, the LMS throws a group of errors
Hi Bill,
I'm going to open a case on your behalf so that our Support Engineers can provide you some additional steps to pull the LMS debug mode and see what information is being passed back and forth. Keep an eye out for an email from Support@articulate.com!
Ashley,
We are having the same problem and have not gotten any solutions from support that work. Can you open a case on our behalf as well? We went to 360 as well and are now experiencing this issue. We're desparate for some assistance with this. We have blurry images and if using states with characters, our characters appear to have a spasmodic disorder when changing states! No good solutions for this issue either. We've tried support, but I really think there's a technology issue here that we need either engineers or dev to look into further. I'm willing to admit user error. We've gone to training via Yukon for Articulate and I believe my IDs are using the skills learned, but the results are suboptimal. We've been using Articulate for 2 years now and upgraded to fix our issues with mobile viewing. That's good now, but we have a whole slew of new issues. Need some of that premium support to further investigate so we can continue to be super happy users! Anything you guys can do to help will be so appreciated!
Hi Robin!
Sorry to hear that you are not receiving the support that you need. You mention working with he support team - do you have a case number that I can look into further and get escalated so that we can get you the assistance that you need. I'd be happy to do that for you :)

Absolutely, Robin! I'm sorry you're running into issues with Storyline 360, and I'm happy to open a case for you. You can also open a new case anytime by clicking this link.
Could you share your project file with our team through this form? Your file will go directly to your case so our engineers can begin testing it. They'll reach out via email as soon as they can!
Thank you Robin - I've added your thoughts to that case and escalated.
It looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if needed and here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.
Hi everyone,
Is there any update or advise regarding the original post by David Jones about content looking blurry?
We are having the same issue with our published courses. When the story is published under "scale player to fill browser window" all content including text is blurry no matter what resolution we test on.
If we choose "lock player at optimal size" we do get crisp content however we would like all our learners to experience our learning without scroll bars no matter what resolution screen they have.
Any help is much appreciated! We are using Storyline 3.
Charlotte
**Update: I have just realised it is only blurry in Chrome, IE and Firefox are crystal clear! Still does anyone know why Chrome doesn't want to play ball?
Hi Charlotte!
Sorry that you are having difficulty with this, but thanks for popping in with your update.
It looks like you were also able to find a helpful thread and I just responded to your post here.
I'm going to add this thread to the report as well.
Hi again, Charlotte ..and those using Storyline 3 who stumble upon this discussion! ☺️
I'm excited to note that we've just released Update 5 for Storyline 3–check out all the new fixes and features here!
In this update, courses should no longer appear blurry when you preview them in Storyline 3 or view the HTML5 output in Chrome.
Here’s where you can install and update Storyline 3 to see everything this version has to offer. Let us know what you think ..and if you're still seeing blurriness, please let us know!
Hello,
I too am facing the same issue with the images. My client said the images look blurry. I am using Articulate Studio 360. The browser setting is Resize browser to fill screen and Scale Player to fill browser window.
Let me know if I can do anything to make the images sharper.
Thanks
Hassy
Hi Hassy,
If your published output is scaled larger than it's original size, then image blurriness can occur.
Have you tried adjusting the settings to:
This should improve the blurriness you are experiencing.
Does this update apply to Storyline 360 as well? Aren't Storyline3 and Storyline 360 the same thing?
Thanks,
Robin
Hi Leslie,
The browser settings are as preferred by the client. That has been maintained in all the prev projects. I don't find the images scaled larger but there is no sharpness in the image quality. Please see the attachments. In Image 1, the logo on the left seems sharper then the logo within the content slide. Also see the image and font quality in image 2. The font used is Arial.
Pls let me know how i can resolve this
Thanks.
Hi Robin,
Yup! This update was already released for Storyline 360 - sorry if we missed this discussion when sharing the good news. You can find it noted in the release notes here for Update 17.
It's worth noting that Storyline 360 will always be the most up to date version, so if it's fixed in Storyline 3 that fix is already available in the latest update of Storyline 360.
Hi Hassy,
Thanks for sharing those images. I can see the difference in quality as you noted, but also since you're scaling the overall images and size of the course some change in quality is expected.
You may also want to take a look at the best practices for working with media in Articulate 360. This article has some specific info for Storyline, but it's similar for Studio.
