Bookmarking a course

Mar 14, 2013

Hi there,

We're trying to set up Articulate courses in SCORM, and we're looking for a way so that users can suspend the course and return to it where you left off in the course via bookmarking. Any suggestions please?

Peter,

When a user exits a course, the course should tell the LMS where the user got to in the course. Previously the courses gave us a 'Lesson Location' piece of code to tell the system where the user got to before so we know how far they got within the course. Sorry if thats not sounding right, I'm just passing along from out developers who know all about coding, whereas I just develop the content

Hi Kerry,

That sounds a bit like the resume data that Storyline sends. Other than that, there's nothing built into Storyline that allows for bookmarking. If your LMS or development team are interested in exploring the exact data that Storyline sends, you may want to enable the LMS debug log and share that information with them.

This article explains how to do that, and though it's specific to Presenter, it should work for Storyline as well.

Thanks, Kerry!

We are publishing quizzes for SCORM 1.2 and using SumTotal's Total LMS. We are using the bookmarking option on the player to prompt the learner to select the option to resume or start over. If the learner resumes the quiz, the answers selected before exiting do not show on our LMS reports. Instead, we are seeing an "undefined" student response. The scoring is transmitting correctly, but we are losing this other data...unless the learner re-visits those pages after resuming the quiz. Can someone offer a solution other than forcing our learners to start completely over should they bail? We do not want to use the submit button on each question. They must be able to move freely between questions and be able to switch their answer choices until they reach the results page.

Thank you,

Leslie McKerchie

Hi Dana!

By default, question slides in Articulate Storyline have a Submit button, meaning each question will be submitted one at a time for evaluation and feedback will be displayed immediately. If you want all the questions to be submitted at the same time at the end of the quiz, change the navigation controls from Submit buttons to Prev/Next buttons. Here's how.

Once you get that set up, I would advise testing your content in SCORM Cloud as well to see if you are able to replicate your issue. This will help us determine if it's your LMS or the course.

Hi Leslie,

Yes, we have removed the submit button and any relevant immediate feedback layers. We want the learners to be able to move freely between questions and not score anything until the they reach the results page. The curious thing is we have used this identical testing format for two years without the same results being reported to LMS. I was wondering if something has changed? In fact, we actually defaulted back to using Storyline 1 for this project because it was successful last year and because we were having an issue with a question counter not functioning properly (and currently under level two Articulate support review) using Storyline 2. The inability to resume the test and not have the student response reported to LMS is something new to us this year.
