Branching

Feb 05, 2014

I'm new to E-learning and am learning to use Storyline.  We would like to create a quiz in which, when the trainee answers the question incorrectly, the quiz will then go back to the correct slide for review.  I did this by creating a trigger, depending  on  whether the response was correct or incorrect.  I then created a duplicate  slide(of the review material) for the question to branch back to and then created a trigger in the duplicate slide to go back to the quiz for another attempt.

I feel like there is another way to do this and have been researching tutorials and stuff and am not getting it.  Is there another way?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any help

Hi Katherine and welcome to Heroes!

Instead of using individual slides for this, you may want to look at the feedback layers that are automatically generated for a question. You can change the number of attempts from 1 to another number, through unlimited and that will automatically generate a try again layer. This will drop the user back into the question and allow them to try it again. If you'd like for the user to go somewhere specific when they've answered correctly you could modify the correct feedback layer to "jump to slide X" when the timeline begins on the layer.

Let us know if you have any other questions, and you may want to also review the tutorials associated here with setting up questions.

Thank you so much for your quick response.  I have studied the feedback layers.  I thought maybe I was just missing something however, after your email and further research , I found that it seems not possible to come back to the question after it has branched to another slide for review.  Is this correct? The person in the forum was in Quizmaker, I am in Storyline.

I have it set up like this:

So if the question is correct it goes to next question-  no problem

But if the question is incorrect, we want them to be taken back to the appropriate slide in the course that discusses that . Accomplished this with branching.

Then we want them to be taken immediately back to the question for a retry.  --- This is my dilemma.

How I accomplished it-

I created a duplicate slide of course material

Have the incorrect/tryagain branched to the new duplicate slide

And then have the duplicate slide set up to go back to the question.

Seems kind of messy, so I just wanted some feedback or suggestions as to another way to accomplish something similar.

Sorry, If I am not getting it J

Hi Katherine,

I'm not sure which forum you're referencing that dealt with Quizmaker - but, I thought the easiest way to answer your question was to make an easy example. What you'll see is the first slide is my content, and the second slide is my question where I've set the "incorrect" layer to branch back to slide 1.1 and based on a T/F variable, the original caption is hidden and some new information is shown to remind the user. The quiz question has slide properties set to "reset to initial state" and then the user can try the question again.

This is a very basic example, and you could add more to it in terms of tracking how many attempts it takes, how fancy the review of material is, etc.

Let me know if you need anything further.
