Branching to 'bridge' lesson then to exam

I want to set up a branching course that enables people who have taken a course to review only the new lesson (lesson 2 of 3) and then branch to the exam at the end of the course. If they do not pass the exam, I then want them to be able to go back to the beginning to be able to take the whole course instead of only the new lesson.
I know the branching part is pretty easy - just set a trigger to go to a specific place in the course. Taking them from lesson 2 to the final exam - should I make use of variables to identify the path? Help me! I'm pretty new to Storyline but eager to learn.
Lynn :)

Def variables Lynn. Dive in. If you get stuck I'll help.
You inspired me! I figured it out - thank you Ryan! To sum up for others - on the 'button' that the user clicks for previously trained, it branches to the correct page and then establishes a variable with the value "Previous". Using an If condition (when branch='Previous') the user would branch to final exam (and not go to lesson 3). Also, if the user fails the exam (with variable "Previous"), I set a condition that shows a button that would branch the user back to the option to review the whole course if they wish to do so.
Thanks Ryan for getting me thinking and experiencing some new Storyline functionality! I hope my explanation isn't Greek (at least my version of it! :) )
Hi, Lynn -- Delighted to hear you got everything sorted out and I think your explanation is great, but if you would like to share your file so that you can illustrate what you did, that would be appreciated, as well!
