Brightcove videos in SL2
Aug 10, 2015
I've read all the other topics on brightcove video issues within SL but I haven't seen anyone with the issues we are having. When we add a video from brightcove to SL2 and upload it to a web server to test, the video takes a while to load (between 10 seconds - 1min).
We did some troubleshooting and it seems to be hanging up on the SL2 web object. Almost like it's having difficulty loading the web object, which then has to go out and grab the video from brightcove. Anyone having this issue?
We also use another authoring tool called Composica. When we add the same video to a Composica course, there is no delay.
We don't know what to do about this except recommend to our customers who want video, for us to use Composica instead of SL2.

Hi Tracy,
I haven't heard of that with videos, or specifically to Brightcove. Have you tried it in another server or even checked it in different web browsers? You'll want to use one of the supported options here for browser, and there are a few servers you could look at testing in here.
Yes, we've tried in other browsers and some do work better but our company only supports IE so we have to make sure it works well in that browser before any others. But like I said, we tested it in two different authoring tools, SL2 and Composicia. The brightcove videos works fine in Composica. We were hoping to switch completely to SL2 but it doesn't look like we can do that if the videos have a delay when loading.
Hi Tracy,
We'd be happy to take a look and do some additional testing as well. If you want to share a course with a link to a Brightcove video you can post it here or send it along to our team here.
If I post the zip file here, will it get to the appropriate people to do the testing and will they know what the issue is I'm having?
Hi Tracy,
If you're able to share the .story file here (zipped up if it's too large to post normally) staff and the community can take a look. If I'm able to experience the same behavior I can connect with our QA team to share.
Here's the zip file. There are videos throughout the course. Our first try I added it as a web object. Then for this version, they are added by going to Insert > Video > Video from website, and adding the javascript code. Doing it the with this method did speed up the load time but the customer is still saying it's really slow.
Thanks Tracy - I took a look and loaded it up here to SCORM Cloud and I didn't experience any playback delays in Chrome or Firefox. I did appreciate your message about the loading, but saw the video very soon after. Can you test out that one and let me know how it behaves for you? I did a quick speed test and I'm getting about 25-30 mbps download speed.
Did you test it in IE9 or higher? Our company only supports IE, unfortunately.
Hi Tracy,
My apologies - I forgot IE based on your initial post. I tested in IE11 and it worked fine there. I can only emulate IE9 and it was causing errors with issue of secured content - so it kept crashing that version. But IE11 seemed to work well. Are you able to test it and experience a different behavior?
I just sent your link to someone on my team who still has IE9 and he didn't get the secured content message. I have IE11 and I've never really had too many issues with it but others in the company have IE9. I'm going to make a minor change to the video code in this course and repost it for you to test and see if that gets rid of the secured content in IE9.
Here's the newest version.
It's so hard to troubleshoot something like this when so many people in the company have different connections, computers, etc. Our team managers have made the rule that if a course has video in it, it will be developed in Composica, not SL2, but I like SL2 much better and don't want this limit set on it.
Hi Tracy,
Was the person on your team able to access the course in IE9? I don't know that the secured content message was prohibiting it playing across the board, but just in terms of how I was accessing it in an emulation of IE 9 (not the real browser).
He was able to see the course and actually a few videos in he did get the secured content message. But the videos took some time to load for him. I wonder if it's a browser issue instead? Maybe SL2 doesn't play nicely in IE9 but gets better in IE11?
Ok I loaded that one up here - http://cloud.scorm.com/sc/InvitationConfirmEmail?publicInvitationId=bea09a68-f205-40c4-840d-5e6378af77ea
Got through it without that error message in IE11 and a version of IE9 and again no delay. Do you want to have folks test that one?
Well, does anything play nicely with Ie9? ;-)
Another thing to keep in mind with the delay - Storyline preloads content as described here and progressively streams video - so if you're clicking through really fast on a slower speed connection you may hit a slide that hasn't loaded yet.
