Built-in Button States won't save

Mar 11, 2016

I've been having an issue with button states.  Here's this workflow that I use and resulting issue:

1.    I insert a built-in button and then format it as desired - color and text.  (Effectively, this is my template for built in colors and states that I use to format the rectangular objects that I actually use for buttons.)

2.    I insert a rectangular object that will become my button, format the text, and then format paint from the Built-in button.

3.    I then save and close.  Upon re-opening, both the built-in button as well as the format painted rectangular object have lost their states.

As part of troubleshooting, I went ahead and inserted a rectangular object, manually added and colored all of the states and used that as my template for the format paint.  In this instance, the states were indeed retained by the template button as well as the painted button.

I am attaching several images as well as my story file:

 beforeClose1.png and beforeClose2.png = screenshots prior to close/save

 afterClose1.png and afterClose2.png = screenshots after close/save

ButtonStateTest.story = test file including both buttons as set up

It seems to be color information is being lost from the states after saving and re-opening.  The font type, size, and even the states themselves are being retained, so this seems like it could possibly be a bug in which the color data is not being retained from a built-in button?

Any thoughts/assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Christie,

The main difference between my issue and the previously reported issue is that I can get it to happen every time that I work with a file.  The attached file was built from a new file, and I can replicate it.  A co-worker of mine (who is using a separate system and license) also has the same issue.

I've been troubleshooting this, and it seems like it could possibly be a bug with the built-in rounded rectangle button.  The circular button doesn't seem to have an issue keeping states through a save/close/re-open cycle.

I'm attaching a file with three different scenarios -  unaltered built-in buttons, custom color fill/outline buttons (but otherwise built-in), and custom states, colors, and shape button.

You'll notice that the circular and the fully custom buttons will keep the states.  The rounded rectangle buttons lose the states upon save/exit/re-open.

Are we the only ones to be able to replicate this issue, or does this happen to other people as well when using that rounded rectangle button?

Thanks!

Hey again, Eric. I see from your screenshots what you're saying, and in the .story file, no customized states were saved.

However, when I applied customizations to the buttons and painted them onto the shapes (on your slide), I saved the changes and closed down. When I reopened, the changes were retained. I then inserted a new slide and went through that process with my own slide, and the states still remained. I'm going to attach your modified project -- maybe if you could open that version, see if the states saved going from my machine to yours.

That being said, can I verify if you and your colleague are saving your project to your local drive? This article describes those best practices.

Crystal,

We are indeed working locally on a hard drive.

In looking at the edit that you made to the built-in button, I do indeed see the color-changed hover state.  However, the DOWN state, which is a darker shade by default in that built-in button has been lost.

Changing the states individually seems to get them to "stick," but if I want to do something like just recolor the button by doing a fill color and line color change and keep the default hover and down shades (lighter and darker of the fill color, respectively), this gets lost by a save.

Hi again, Eric.  I did some further testing, and you are absolutely right.  With either a completely unchanged button, or one formatted using the Button Fill drop-down (I used the eyedropper for fill color), the states were not retained after a save.  When I chose the Button Tools > Format > Button styles, the top, more flat one had the same problem, but the other "gradient" fill styles did not.

While I wasn't completely aware of this problem, our QA team is, and they are investigating.  I don't have a date for a fix, but I'll keep this thread updated, and will add our discussion to their record.

I'm sorry for your trouble, but your extra detail really helps us to understand!

Hi all,

I wanted to provide an update here, as Storyline 2 Update 11 was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here. The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixed an issue where

  • Fixed issue where default button states wouldn't always save correctly (e.g., colors might change)

You can download the latest update here, and after downloading and installing the latest update you’ll want to republish any existing content to ensure that the updates and fixes are applied.
