Thanks Ellana for sharing the file. I saw the same thing on your slide - but adding a new slide to your project I was able to add the checkmark bullets and those appeared normally/as expected. I actually saw odd bullets regardless of what type of bullets I chose on your first slide - so it seems that they're somehow mapped incorrectly. I tried changing the font as a whole but saw no change - but if you look at the "Symbols" section when inserting the bullets and change the font there you'll see that the symbol I'm seeing of the u with dots above (umlaut) is the symbol selected for Opens Sans - vs. The Windings font showing the checkmark.
Since it worked normally on a new slide, I'd suggest looking at recreating the slide and ensure you're working on local project files as detailed here.
