Button Highlight Function

Mar 06, 2018

Hello! I am super new to storyline, and have been working with is for a grad assignment. So far I'm loving it, but I still have a ton to learn. One thing that I would really like to include on my next assignment update is to have button highlight or glow when I talk about it. I want the button to already be there (which I have), and then when I talk about the button and explain it's function,  I want to be able to time it with the audio so that it glows for a minute while I talk about it. And then I want that button to stop glowing and I want the next button to start glowing while I talk about it.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi Danielle,

I would do this with states. If it's a button that you added from the Storyline ribbon menu (rather than a shape you converted into a button by using triggers), it will by default have a number of built-in states. You can edit one of those to add your glow (perhaps the disabled states so learners click on it until they know what the button does?) or add a completely new state with the glow.

Then, you just need to add triggers to make it glow at a certain time and then turn it back to normal. This is what the first one might look like:

Let me know if you run into any issues when you do that in your project!

The easiest and simplest way is to start a new slide at the point the audio starts. That way you can use the slide timeline as the audio timeline, which allows you a lot of freedom that the audio timeline doesn't contain. For instance, these triggers: "Change state of Button 1 to Glow when timeline reaches xxx seconds" and "Change state of Button 1 to Normal when timeline reaches xxx seconds".  These are truly the triggers you want, but they are available only in reference to the timeline of the slide.

If you're into more complex, convoluted methods, there are some, but I won't complicate your life until you make a very good case for absolutely having to do things the hard way. :)

Thank you! So, yes originally I had created my own icons and formatted them into buttons, but it's been easy for me to go back, create a button, and still format it the way I want. The trouble I'm running into now is that I don't have the option for a "glow" trigger. I understand the concept, I just don't have that option. What are your thoughts? I'm just going to use a different one right now (Down) which is definitely less appealing and less eye catching, but it'll work until I figure out the next steps! Thanks again!

And yes, Walt, I don't believe I will ever make the case for that!
