Button on master slide controlled by variable not functioning

Feb 27, 2014

Hi,

I have a custom Next button on my Slide Master that is acting a little peculiar. I would like the button to serve two functions. One is to jump to the next slide once the timeline completes or all layers have been revealed. This is controlled by a trigger with a conditional variable called "complete." When complete is True, the button opens the next slide. This part is functioning fine.

The next function is to open the next scene from a Summary slide. This is controlled by trigger with a conditional variable called "summary." When summary is True, the click is supposed to jump to the next scene. This does not function.

Does anyone know why the Next Slide trigger works, but the Next Scene trigger does not?

I thought perhaps because I am hiding the player's Next and Prev buttons, that perhaps there was no "Next Scene" set, but if I put an identical trigger using a key press or a slide-level button on the slide itself, it works fine (the next scene opens without setting it to go to a specific scene).

I've tried changing the order of the triggers. Variable are changing as expected.

Motivations for wanting this generic (next scene as opposed to a specific scene) is that we are constructing our training in self-contained modules that can be rearranged, added, and subtracted to create a course. The less overhead the better.

If there is no way to get this to work, then I would probably hide the button based on the variable and show a different one in it's place at the slide level.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Based on what you're describing, it sounds like you want one button to be able to serve two "jump to" functions - which if the first one functions, then the second one wouldn't ever have time to play as you'd already be on a new slide.  If you're using some conditions to determine which trigger should function - that would be something I'd want to take a look at to better understand your set up. Are you able to share it here with us?

Thanks Ashley,

I will check on the "next slide" trigger firing before the "next scene" trigger. That makes sense... I did try moving the next scene trigger up, but perhaps I missed something.

Do the triggers associated with the Slide Master fire before or after those on the slide?

I can't share the whole story, but I I'll try to create something that illustrates what I'm trying to do.

Thanks again,

Dan

Hi Dan,

  • If there are triggers on the master slide as well as the content slide, the master slide triggers get executed first.
  • If there are multiple triggers on the same object that are triggered by the same action (such as "on click"), the triggers get executed in the same order in which they appear in the Triggers panel in Storyline. (You can use the Up and Down arrows to adjust the order of triggers.)

For more on how trigger order works, you'll want to review this article and the linked tutorial.
