Button Set - 7 on one slide, not working correctly.

Mar 01, 2019

Hi there,

First I admit I read about button sets, checked the different discussions, and I thought I understood it, but it is not doing what I expected in this course.

I have 7 statements and they have to select if it is a myth or fact.  Each myth fact per question I made as a button set.  Each button when clicked pops up a lightbox.  I assumed if the 2 buttons are a set, if they click Myth they see the pop up window and close it, they wouldn't be able to click fact, because myth was already clicked. So I think I might be misunderstanding something.  If I can't do it, I can live with them clicking both, they see the same answer almost anyway.  But I really thought I understand the button set purpose.  Anyone willing to take a look, it is slide 4 with the activity.

Also please note I am on October 30th version of 360 as I am waiting for a bug to be fixed for another issue in an existing elearning so cannot upgrade.

Button sets ensure that only one button in a set can be selected at any given time. That doesn't mean, that by selecting one, you disable the others; they can still be clicked but will reset any previously selected buttons in the set. If you do want to disable myth when you click Fact and vice versa, you need to add triggers to do that. Have a look at the attached where on slide 4, where I changed the first question.

Hi Teresa,

In the attached version of your file I have added two variables (Myth1 and Myth2), which start at zero and then change to 1 if the Myth button is pressed or 2 if the Fact button is pressed for both Myths 1 and 2 respectively. These variables are then used to disable the other button to ensure only one option can be selected. They are also reset to zero when the slide timeline starts so that you can start from scratch if the slide is revisited. If you don't want this option, just remove the reset triggers. The reason I have used number rather than true/false variables is because I wanted a third state (the zero start state).

You will need to finish off the rest of the variable and triggers as I have only done the first two to get you going.

Hope this helps.

By the way, I think your course looks great.

Thanks Ned
This is great! Now for learning in order for button sets to work do you always have to create variables? Was I missing that part?

Thanks Michael
Appreciate how quickly everyone responds. And thanks for the clarification regarding how the sets work.

Hi Teresa,

In answer to your earlier question regarding variables, I hate to make things complicated, but the answer is "not necessarily"!

It all depends on what you are trying to do. If, for example, you are using button sets to set up a quiz question, the button set ensures you can only select one option, but can change your selection up until you select the Submit button. At this point you are normally moved onto the next question and additional variables are not required.

If, on the other hand, you wish to drive other options depending on what selections you make, variables are the best and sometimes only way to achieve that.

The best advice I can offer is to have a go at solving any problems you have and, when all else fails, post a query and someone will undoubtedly have a solution for you.

I read the posts on a daily basis and I find I learn something new almost every day. It's a great way to build your confidence and experience in using the software.

Above all else, enjoy it !
