I assume when you say text-based buttons you're referring to the two buttons outlined in red in this screen shot.
You can change the left-most button to a square by holding the shift-key down while dragging on the stage after clicking Insert>Button.
The right-most button can be changed to a round circle by holding the shift key down while dragging on the stage after clicking Insert >Button. But, I and others have found that after it reaches a certain size, it no longer maintains its circle shape.
Thanks for your response to my query. What I actually meant was that the default button, the one on the left to be more specific, has a rounded edge to it. My question was, can I remove the rounded edge and make it sharp the way it is in a normal square?
Thanks! I actually had to create button images and use them as buttons. My purpose was to use the in-built buttons and use the arrow icons in them so I could use them as next and previous button.

Does that answer your question?
you can also use any shape and format paint the shadow formatting onto them the only thing you lose is the icon

No, but you could add a square and format paint it
