Can I change the time limit for a quiz retry?

Oct 23, 2020

Hoping someone can help,

I have created an assessment which has a time limit assigned to it (using the inbuilt quiz timer). Learners must achieve 100% to pass but if they achieve between 75% and 99.9% they are able to retry those questions that they got wrong.

Currently when they click retry, the timer resets and they are allowed the full amount of time to resit these questions. I have been asked to reduce this to keep the test fairer.

Is it possible to set a different time limit for the retry? I am assuming that this can probably be achieved by creating my own timer as a variable and then setting a trigger along the lines of "set timer variable to xx minutes when retry button clicked" however if possible I would really like to use the inbuilt timer.

Thanks!

Update!

Having had a play around with this this weekend, I was able to come up with a solution that I thought I would share in case anyone else needs to create a second count down timer for a resit. (BTW this has been done with a question bank. It should also work if you are just using slides.)

As it didn't seem to be possible to build one within Storyline's in built timer, and I had huge issues trying to get a "set variable to..." trigger working. I ended up creating two timers in the master view of the quiz slides (following guidance that I found elsewhere on this forum, using variables and triggers). One is my original timer and the second is the re sit timer. Both sit on different layers.

- The original timer is set to start when the timeline starts on the quiz master slide.

- When it reaches 0:00, a third layer is shown which effectively ends the quiz and takes the user to the results slide, where they can choose to resit those questions that they got wrong.

- The second layer is set to start when the timeline starts on the quiz master slide, if the variables in the original timer = 0

- I also included a userattempts variable so that the second timer would kick in when the user resits, even if they had time left on the first timer.

I've attached the file that I used to test this.
