Can I create a quiz that registers as complete if user exceeds number of allowed attempts or passes?

Dec 17, 2019

I need to create a quiz that marks complete after 3 attempts or the user passes. Is this possible in Articulate?

Hi John!

Absolutely! I would suggest using the trigger "Submit results" and creating a variable that tracks the attempts. Then the trigger would read, "Submit results when the timeline starts if the Variable is greater than or equal to (blank)"

If you want to share your file with us, I can offer a more tailored suggestion! You can do so by using the "Add Attachment" button in this discussion.

Hi John,

Thank you for sharing your file!

I ran through your course and uploaded the course to SCORM cloud to test the tracking/reporting. Here is what I found:

  • The triggers/variables on your results slide work great! They track the number of attempts and the proper layers show according to the number of attempts I have and quiz score.
  • I added a trigger to your Results Slide that submits the results when the timeline starts:
  • To also track/report the course completion, I added a complete course trigger to your last slide when the user clicks the Exit button:

  • For the tracking/reporting option, I used the option to track the course using the quiz results slide:
  • After making those changes, I uploaded the course to SCORM Cloud. After a few run-throughs, I found the course was reporting the completion, success, and score. The results show in the image below were after exhausting the number of quiz attempts and still failing the quiz:

Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

Hi John.

I published the course using SCORM 2004 4th Edition and uploaded the course to SCORM Cloud. Since each LMS can interpret completion and success statuses differently, your LMS provider might be best equipped to help if you continue not to see the statuses you expect.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Hi John,

Thank you for letting me know! Let's see if we can pinpoint what is happening!

I took a different approach to the course and adjusted a few triggers. After uploading to SCORM Cloud, I found the following was taking place:

  • The course would be marked as complete/incomplete appropriately
  • The Success status would show when the course was fully completed
  • The Score would be represented each time the quiz was taken

Here are the changes I made:

On the last slide, I moved the Submit results trigger and removed the complete course trigger. I also made sure the Submit Results trigger was first:

For tracking and reporting, I used SCORM 2004 4th ed. as the Output Option, changed the LMS Reporting option to Passed/Failed:

Lastly, I made sure the Tracking option was using tracking the Results Slide:

I am attaching the test file to also show the changes I made. Please let me know if you continue to hit any snags!
