1. Is there a way to "lock" the background in my slide so it doesn't move around every time I try to move an object or something else on my slide? Is there a way to make the background image stay in place?
2. On my very first slide there is no "previous" trigger, but when I go to view my presentation in Scene mode, I see the Previous button on the first slide. I can't figure out how to get rid of the previous button on the very first slide. Thank you for any help.
how have you set your background. Did you right click the slide > format background then choose your image? It should then be set at your image and not move around.
If you have added an image to the timeline you can click the 'lock' icon next to the object so it doesn't move around
Your question about the previous button. Check the slide layer properties to see if the 'prev' option is ticked

Wendy - That was easy. Thanks so much. Both worked. I had hunted around for a long time trying to find the answer. Much appreciated!
Glad to help Cathy...
