Here is the documented information on the backwards compatibility. When you open a SL1 file in SL2, a back up copy will automatically be made in case you need to go back to that version. It will not include any edits made in SL2, but it is there if needed.

No. The file architecture is entirely different. SL1 files can be opened in SL2 but SL2 files cannot be opened in SL1.

Was hoping to be able to send some work back and forth to a colleague but looks like I need to upgrade both of us.
