Can't find .story files after computer crash

Jul 13, 2016

My computer crashed (MacBook pro, running Storyline 2 in Windows partition) but I was able to recover my data from my hard drive. I reinstalled Storyline 2, but cannot locate any of the .story files for my projects. The storyline contents folders are all there, as are the .zip output to LMS folders, but no .story. So...I can't open my projects that were in progress or open any to edit after they have been published to LMS. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere I know, using various methods and really can't understand why they would be "gone".

Hi, Jill - Thanks so much for your question and I'm really sorry to hear of your troubles! There is a chance you could be dealing with corruption, however, there may still be a working version of your projects in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Hi, Jill -- Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear that you were not able to locate your missing files! Perhaps you may want to connect with our Support Engineers via this form so that they can pull system logs, etc. to provide additional technical insights. If you are able to share your case number, we will gladly follow along with their progress.

Hi Travis,

The Trial is a full version of our software.

The temp files are only created if:

  • you've enabled auto-recovery,
  • you've saved this .story file at least once prior, and
  • Storyline crashed or shut down on it's own

They should be created in that directory, but if you've modified how the install of Storyline is set up, or where files are saving they could be somewhere else. You may want to search your system for those file types or file names.

All I have is the zip files to work with. Is there a way to be able to open and change the content? I originally built the modules in SL 2&3 several years and a couple of computers ago.

I'd hate to rebuild all the learning modules. I'm hoping there have been advances made for situations like this, over the past 3+ years.

Thank you
