I cannot find the .story source file or the .tmp file for an old project that I need to update using the instructions:
1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
But I do have the published for LMS files and zip folder. Is there a way to recover the .story file from theses?
Sorry to hear you're stuck on tracking down these files. Michael is right, that the .story file is not included in the published output. It's also a good item to note that Storyline doesn't automatically save the files, so you'd want to make sure to save before closing Storyline or publishing your course.

You cannot recover the editable .story file from published content.
