I don't know what is going on, because I've created 4 new trainings over the last two days, but all of a sudden, Articulate won't allow me to insert a .ppt at all - it locks up EVERY time. I've tried multiple things to fix it - it isn't a certain .ppt, it is any one I try (including ones that worked two hours ago...), so I have no idea what to do!
I can't import a ppt slide at all - not into a new project. I haven't tried importing one into an older project, but I have a feeling its going to be the same story. It locks up as soon as I choose the slides to import, no matter what ppt I use.

Have you tried creating a new project file and import the ppt slide into that, then go to your original story file and import the SL project file
Is the ppt file located on your local drive?

Sounds like you may need to conduct a repair of your Storyline software.
Please be sure that you are working locally as well.
