Can't get custom navigation on slide master to display properly

Jan 22, 2019

Hi everyone:

I am trying to set up custom navigation on the slide master so I don't have to repeat it on every slide. I wanted the first slide to have the navigation come in with an animation, and I couldn't figure out how to do that without it animating on every slide. So I created 2 layouts on the slide master--one that animates and one that doesn't. Slide 1 uses the layout that animates and slide 2 uses the one that does not.

Then I would like the navigation buttons along the bottom to change to the visited state when each slide is visited. I thought I had it working with variables and triggers on each slide, but when I preview (and even publish) and test, the buttons are not all showing visited state as they should. I can't see what I have done wrong.

While we are at it, I would also like the Next button at the top right to flash every few seconds after the timeline ends if the user does not click it. I was thinking have it alternate between initial and hover states every 2 seconds or so. I started playing around with that but didn't get very far.

One final question/issue: my course has video on every slide, so the file is large. I went in and removed the video and did a Save As to reduce the file size so I could post it here, and the saved file was the same size as the previous file with the video. This has happened to me before, however when I have sent files in to be reviewed they were able to save them without the large content and significantly reduce the file size. How do I get it to save to a smaller file size after removing the videos so I can post it here for review?

Any ideas on any of this?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for reaching out and I do think that taking a look at your file would be best.

A project file might not immediately shrink in size when you delete a video. Storyline keeps deleted assets temporarily after you delete them in case you need to click Undo to restore them. The good news is your project file will eventually shrink, usually after saving it a couple times. But you can also get it to shrink right away by saving and closing the project file, then re-opening it and saving it again.

To make your button flash you can set it animate in and out and then set triggers to change state to hidden when entrance animation end and normal when exit animation ends.

I wouldn't use Visited as that is a built in state that just means it has been clicked, you will need timeline start triggers on your slide master to change the state of each object to "visited" or a better state when your variable conditions are met.

If it isn't working then there maybe something wrong with your logic.

Hello:

I was finally able to get the file size reduced, so I have added the project file here. If you preview the full project and jump around within that you will notice the 'visited' states do not seem to display correctly on the lower navigation?

I added a separate layout on the master slide so that slide 1 could be animated and the others would not, but it seemed like the navigation was displaying correctly after that. I am not sure what I did to mess it up or why it is not working...

Hi all:

Thanks for the responses. I think we have the issue figured out. However, I have since discovered that if you go into the course, then close the course and go back in to the course later, the course launches, but all you see is a blank white screen.

The spinning icon is there while the course is 'loading', but it looks like it never actually loads. However, I have discovered that if you scroll the mouse very carefully over the screen you eventually find 2 buttons, and clicking them will put you into and display the course.

I believe these buttons are the 'would you like to resume where you left off', buttons, but they are not visible (see attached screenshot, where the mouse has changed to be able to click a button that you cannot see, but if you move the mouse off the button it goes back to the standard cursor).

I have checked the player properties and everything I can think of. What would make the screen not display (or show up as blank white) like that when revisiting the course?

Hi Mike,

Based on your image it looks like you're launching the courses in Internet Explorer? Can you check what version of IE you're using and where you've uploaded the course to test it? Testing web or LMS published content locally is known to cause some security issues and odd playback.

If you're uploaded it and it's still behaving oddly, can you share the link here with us or privately with Chino? That way we can test in IE as well.
