Can't get Timeline to work

On my slide, I have 4 images with text boxes representing steps in a set of instructions. I've created 4 layers - one for each step with a transparent rectangle object to highlight each step with a timeline of 5 seconds for each layer (i.e. 0 to 5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16 - 20 seconds respectively).
I added a trigger to each layer:
Action: Show layer
Layer: Name of layer
When: Timeline Starts
Object: Unassigned (since there's no "button")
When I begin the time line in the base layer (either with the preview button on lower left hand side of screen or the Preview this slide button on top right) the time line goes through, but the layers do not show up.
HOwever, each layer appears to work individually with the time line.

Without seeing your file, I can only guess that your triggers are placed in the wrong spot. See attached example of a file with four layers where each layer has a 5-sec.timeline and when the timeline ends calls the next layer. Once layer 4's timeline ends, the layer closes and returns to the baselayer. Hope that gives some ideas.

I went step by step through all your settings and changed mine.......I had a number of errors.......
May I make a suggestion that a tutorial be developed on this process? It's not really intuitive.....
