Can user have drag control over Video?

Dec 18, 2013

I'm using some video for 3D shapes that unfurl to demonstrate what the shape would look like flat (discussing surface area.)

Is there a way for me to allow the user to control the video by dragging along the video timeline?

Basically, I'm wondering if I can set it up so that the video plays only when the user moves along the video timeline.

Thanks

Hi Tod,

I'm not sure I fully understand how you'd like the video to play, but (depending on the video type) you could enable "Show video controls" and then the user would have access to the play/pause button and the video seekbar. Please note, that enabling the video's controls will stop it from being synced to the slide's timeline.

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the response  (And sorry I know I wasn't overly clear. )

I have enabled the show video controls, but what I would like is to have the video only play when they drag across the video timeline (As if they were physically moving the movie forward. Thus if they stop dragging across the timeline the movie stops.  The movie mirrors the speed at which they move the mouse along the video timeline.

(If it is a 10 second video they could move the video timeline to the 8 second mark and leave it there and the movie would be stopped at that point.)

Hi Tod,

Sorry I missed this last week.  I don't know of a way to move the video forward only based on dragging. If they used the built in seekbar or the video controls (although not together) they'd be able to scrub the video forward and backward, but I haven't seen a set up where the start and stop of the video is controlled by the user dragging it.

Thanks for the response Michael.  Sorry to hijack the thread.

Can you think of any outside-the-box ideas to help me achieve this?

I'd like to let the user control the amount of "pressure in a pipe" or "weight on a beam" - and see the results live as they change the variables.

I've got a subscription to eLearning Brothers library > so plenty of stock images/videos.

Any clues how I can make something like this?

Hi Pete,

So this should meet your requirements.  It's not the most elegant solution for the developer - but the end user's see what you want them to see.  I inserted a slider with 31 steps, then created 31 states for the initial (first) image.  In each state, delete the original image, and insert the next frame.

Let me know how it goes!

Simon,

Wow! That's fantastic. That will work  for my purposes. Thank you so much.

I have to confess that I just started using this software today (!). I'm a real novice, and I don't really understand what is involved in creating a slide like this one with multiple states. I tried to figure out how to swap out your images with my own, but it wasn't obvious to me.

Also, I could be wrong, but it looks pretty labor-intensive to map each state to a single image. Is there any way to make that time efficient? I might have several of these in one course.

Thanks again,

Pete

Hi Pete!

Glad that Simon was able to assist you here and this is a big one for a newbie for sure. I did want to pop in and share our tutorial for adding and editing states in case that would be helpful to you.

You can swap your images in the states tab and see all of the images Simon has as well. Hopefully he can pop in with some time saving tips if he has them because that does look like a lot of work.

Hey Pete,

Actually - I do have a few small tips.

  1. Change the filename of all your images to numbers.  Create the states with the same (numbered) names, like my example.  This will help ensure you're selecting the correct image for each state.
  2. For each subsequent state after "Normal" - don't delete the original image, simply insert the new image above/ontop of the original.  This will help if you need to resize/align each image, to make sure they're all sitting in the same place.
  3. You can double click a state to go into edit mode (makes things a little quicker).
  4. You can copy/paste your triggers, and edit each one using the blue-hyperlinks (which opens a drop down menu) - this speeds up the trigger creation alot.

Whilst I agree that this is not the most elegant solution, it points back to one thing that I love about Storyline 2 - there is always a way to achieve your desired outcome, it's just a matter of discovering the best solution!  Anyway - I'm preaching to the converted.
