Can you publish a storyline project with an embedded video as a video?

Jul 16, 2018

Per this helpful documentation of how to publish a course to a video file, it says that some features will not work, including flash movies and web movies. https://community.articulate.com/series/74/articles/storyline-360-user-guide-how-to-publish-a-course-to-video

I have a question about whether a course that makes heavy use of an uploaded video (with layered text, images, hyperlinks) could be packaged and exported as a video.

Hi Jennifer,

What video types have you added to the course? Also, are the images, hyperlinks, etc. in the original video or included in Storyline?

A standard video file (not a website, web object, or Flash video) should work fine, but keep in mind the user won't be able to click on items like a hyperlink once you publish the whole course to video.

If you're not yet using Storyline 360, take a look at the trial of Articulate 360 here! You could test publishing one of your videos to make sure it meets your needs.

I haven't created the project yet; but was brought an idea about making a video interactive, and wondered if it could be accomplished using Storyline. My company is not yet using Storyline 360 - we are still on Storyline 2. The video type would likely be an MP4. I was hoping to overlay some images over the video to appear at various points of the timeline, and also have some links to resources. I'm trying to advise using a storyline file as the output and host it out to an internal webpage for accessing, but my company has a video interface, and the stakeholders want this to posted on that platform. It does not sound like the links or resources could be included in a video export, so I'm thinking they may need to explore more robust video editing capabilities.

Hi Jennifer,

Storyline 2 doesn't have a publish to video feature (although plenty of folks created their own videos using screen recording tools or similar), but even with the Storyline 360 publish to video feature those videos won't be interactive.

Could you host the content externally and then just link back to the company platform? Amazon S3 has really generous hosting limits and good pricing too. Uploading Storyline web content there is pretty easy too - and here's just one option on how to do it.
