Can you resize screen recordings?

Apr 05, 2013

I’m new to Storyline and I’ve had Storyline capture my screen movements for me using the “Record Screen” option.  Now they’ve placed each step into the course for me, but I would like to resize the entire screen so that there is a blank area above the “screen capture” for me to type text.  Is this possible??? Or am I forced to insert text on top of my image?

Thanks!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Jessica!

First, can you tell us what type of screen recording you inserted into your course?

If you inserted a single video recording, you can resize the video by selecting it in the slide and dragging the "grabbers" on the edges. Alternatively, you can select the video in the slide and edit the size of the video by adjusting the "Size" options under the "Options" tab.

However, if you've created a step-by-step screen recording or a recording that separates each section of your video, you won't be able to adjust the size. This is because the separated sections actually become a part of the slide backgrounds.

I hope this information helps!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Christine-

Thanks very much for your reply.

I'm specifically referring to inserting step-by-step screen recordings.  I understand what your'e saying because it becomes part of the slide background.  Is there really no way to adjust the background "image" once the step-by-steps are inserted into Storyline?  I really hate the idea of having my text over top of my images and moving around from screen to screen.  I was hoping I could minimize the "image" so that I could have an area to add text at the top of those screens.

Thanks!

You will most likely have to adjust the size of your project..so instead of "shrinking".. you have to increase the size of the slide where it's on. If you have time though.. you can decide on the resolutions you want to use and then capture the screen recording to the preferred size and put it on the slide with the size you also want.

Hope that makes sense.

Let me know if you have questions.

Good morning Jessica!

One thing you could try is adjusting the Story Size. Keep in mind, however, that this will adjust the size of the entire slide. This may work pretty well for you though, if you'd like to give it a try. This way, when you insert the Step-By-Step recordings, there will be more space available and the content will have a larger display.

If you haven't seen it already, you may want to check out the following tutorial:

Articulate > Tutorials > Choosing a Story Size

What I would suggest doing is find your ideal Story Size, then record your Step-By-Step recordings with some "extra space" at the top of the video. Then when you're on the slide, you can cover that section of extra space with text or shapes and add the custom content you'd like to display.

Good morning. I hope you don't mind my joining the discussion. I'm Paul from the Philippines and also new to Storyline. I, too, am trying to insert recorded videos onto my deck and one person advised to adjust the settings of the recording to fit the size of the Articulate slide. I am not really sure how to do it, pardon my ignorance. He says that the "demo" video is somewhat smaller than the ARticulate slide itself. It might be that participants would find it challenging to read what is being typed on the address bar, etc. I would appreciate your help ladies. Thank you and greetings from the other side of the Pacific. Have a good one.

Hi Rachel,

Are you trying to resize a step by step screen recording? It sounds like you've made the change to the story size as detailed here and using the fill background option? What choice are you using in the "position" drop down?

If you'd like to share a copy of your .story file here we can also take a look at that!

Ashley,  I actually figured that one out.  I needed to rerecord my screencast and use the default sizing proportions not, drag to fit my screen and it worked.  Now I'm having another issue.  In this demo - how do you set up the text boxes to enter in the text to where you are 'doing' it as the user?  I can't figure that out and I'm searching through forums and I must not be looking in the right spot?  Help.

Sean Morrow

No it wasn't.  I did that.  But the text fields weren't doing a correct/incorrect.  I figured that out now.  But - I would rather that it just move to the next slide if they get it right and not pop up the "correct" dialog box.  Is this possible.

My file is attached.

This was the example I found that I was trying to duplicate http://articulate-heroes-authoring.s3.amazonaws.com/David/HarvestScreenSimulation/story_html5.html

Dave doesn't have the pop ups but I can't figure out how to do it.  Sorry for the influx of questions, it's only my 3rd day working with StoryLine.

Hi Rachell!  Since those options are chosen before the step-by-step slides have been created, there is no way to make changes to them after inserting the slides.

But!  You can go back to your Insert tab > Screen Recordings, click on the thumbnail of that screen recording, and insert it again.  Just remember to delete the first set of slides.

Good to know.  I think I figured out a work around so that I don't have to redo it all.  Another question, I've searched in the discussions and see that a lot of people have issues using TAB as a submission button because it wants to highlight the buttons in yellow boxes.  I have yet to find a work around for that so that tab submits the interaction without having to go through all the yellow boxes?  Does it exist and I just can't find it?
