cannot open a project file on any computer except the original

Jun 14, 2013

There are four of us in a development group working on an elearning project. One of us (A ) saved a Storyline project and then attempted to pa ss it to another(B) to do further work. None of the other three computers (B, C or D)can open this file. B, C, and D can pass files back and forth with no problem, but files saved by A cannot be opened by B, C or D. Help!!!

Welcome to the community, Roger!

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're running into with this.

First, can you please confirm that everyone with access to the file is working with it locally? I'm guessing you may be sharing the file over a network drive, since so many developers are working on the project. This is fine for storing, but if you try to modify/access the file from an external source, you can run into some strange issues.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Also, please make sure that everyone's opening the .STORY file for the project and not the published output.

If the problem continues, can you tell me what happens when they try to open the project? Are they receiving an error message, etc.?

Thanks!

We are working on our local C:/ drives (desktop) and using a usb hard drive to transfer the files. When we try to open the file on a computer other than the one that created the file, Storyline opens, but there are no scenes or slides present. We are waiting for our IT dept to install update 3 (we are military and users cannot install updates) and will have them reload the Storyline software on the offending computer.
