I can't find the tutorial so quickly, but there are few ways of achieving this:
Let's say that at the beginning of your course, you'd ask the user to select one of 4 different characters:
Insert 4 characters in your project, having 4 different states.
On the "select your character slide"
Create a true/false variable for each of the characters, and set the initial value to "false"
Create triggers that change the variable value to true when the user made a character selection.
On other slides
Insert just a single character (with 4 states)
Create 4 triggers at the beginning of the timeline to show the state based on the character selection made on the previous slide. example: change state of character 1 to "Rutwin" when (variable) rutwin is equal to true
I know this isn't a full-fledged tutorial, but I hope it's enough to get you started!

Hi Arduino,
It looks like Rutwin has pointed you in the right direction, and I wanted to share some other information on changing the states of characters:
Tutorial on changing the character at a specific time.
Making adjustments to characters you've inserted
A forum thread on how to change the character based on narration
Good luck with your project!
