Change default location for .storyline templates

May 02, 2014

Is it possible to change the default location for Storyline templates (and where Storyline 'saves' projects, by default)? The default is \My Articulate Projects\Storyline Templates - but in my work environment, this folder is automaticall created on a network server. This causes Storyline to respond slowly (or not at all) so I'd prefer to store templates and projects in a local folder. Is there a setting for this? If so, I'm missing it. (Or maybe this was a location that was set during installation?)

Thanks in advance if any knows how to resolve this.

Hi Allan and welcome to Heroes!

There isn't a way to change the default path, but you will want to save all your Storyline files to a local drive and Storyline should be a local install.  But when choosing to save the .storytemplate or .story files, you can choose to save somewhere other than the default location. Also, if you'd like to see future support for changing the default you'll want to share your thoughts in the form of a feature request as well.

Thanks so much, Ashley. This was very helpful. One quick follow-up, if I may... is the 'default' location for ' \My Articulate Projects\Storyline Templates' selected during the Storyline installation? My IT department completed the installation for me, so that was not something I had an opportunity to select when the software was installed. I almost never complete work on the network and would have preferred the default location for ' \My Articulate Projects\Storyline Templates' to be on my hard drive (just like 'My Documents', 'My Pictures', etc.) but that's not where Articulate is pointing to. Is this something that could be changed by uninstalling and reinstalling?

Hi Allan,

The directory is the same, but the drive is specified when installing the software. If it's pointing to a network drive, I'd be concerned about the installation drive of the software itself.

Now, if your user profile is on the network drive or tied to that, your IT team should be able to change this.

If not, you may want to reinstall on the C: drive, so that the folder is created under your Windows user profile and it should point to your local hard drive.

Let us know how it goes!

What I hear you saying is that it's not possible to move the My Articulate Projects folder out of My Documents or change the location of this folder during installation, is that correct?

We've had the same problem and it's been a big hassle for us.  I imagine other users in large corporations have similar problems because their My Documents folder is located on a network drive with limited space. I will submit it as a feature request.  I'll note that Captivate has the ability to change the default publishing and cache locations, but their template files are also stuck in My Documents and cannot be moved.

Ah, thanks Susan.

Sounds like you may want to work internally with your team to understand how to best handle, but we do not support or recommend working on a server.

It looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if needed by clicking ‘Edit’ beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

Hi, I would also support this (being able to choose local default folder.

We use OneDrive a lot, so I work with the local file, abnd when I am finished it is synched with the cloud. This way, I can collaborate with colleagues and I automatically have a backup, whioch is a very comforting thought.

But obv. this OneDrive is not the default folder...

Hi Leslie,

Curious to know where you guys are with the feature request you made.

I am in a similar situation in that my Documents folder is "hosted" or "synced" with OneDrive. So every time I go to access my templates, they all have to download from OneDrive (my company has created this default). I would love to be able to create a local folder for my templates.

Thanks!

Any update on the request to set the default build location folder? I've run into a known issue with file saving when Carbon Black is used. Articulate Support recommended putting the build folder on the Carbon Black whitelist. It would be nice if I could define where that folder will be, and then set it up as the default Storyline build folder.
