change screen recording default for all modes

Mar 05, 2018

Hi,

I have searched and I believe this is not a question somebody asked before.

In SL when you take a screen record a lot of things are automatically generated (if you turn on the options): hotspots, marker/hint, etc.  The hotspots are often not correct, and we may need to change the hint text.

The problem is, we can change these things only on the slide level, that is, once they are inserted. Suppose you have a view mode, you tweak everything. Then you insert the cast again in try mode, all these tweaking are gone--you have to do it again! And then if you do a test mode, you have to do it again...

I was wondering if there is an obvious way to avoid the duplicate work.

I see there is "action fine-tuning" on the recording level; but it is only timeline changes there.

Hi Dong,

Great question, and I don't believe I've seen that one before!

The screen recording captions and hotspots are generated automatically, and it would be a cool feature to transfer changes you made in Try mode to Test mode too. I'd love for you to share more on how this would help your course development by sending thoughts to our Product team here!

I'd like to help figure out why things are not appearing where you'd expect though! Do you see this no matter what you record, or only recording a particular application or from a certain browser? What version and update of Storyline are you using?

Thanks Ashley!

Regardless of the circumstances there will always be the need to change hotspot or caption.
It could be the system recorded the wrong area, or I want a larger/smaller area. For example, it seems to me that the system only records a fixed size window as hotspot around your click. But for text input, the size of the text entry box is different and I want to hotspot to be the same as the input box. You get the idea.

I do not think this is a problem as I can go in and fix it myself. But it WILL be a problem if I have to fix it several times for the same screencast!

Best,

Dong

Hey Dong.  That makes total sense.  Thanks for sharing your perspective.

The size and location of some of the recorded elements is dependent on the data communicated by the application you're recording. You're right, that sometimes you may need to adjust the size or placement of an element after you've inserted your screen recording as step-by-step slides in your Storyline course.

Note: If you're recording your web browser, Internet Explorer is recommended. It provides the best data. Firefox also works well. Google Chrome does not do a good job of communicating data to Storyline. Click here for more information.

I hope that helps provide some context around what could be happening!
