Change slide navigation method in the actual course?

Hello Storyline, first time post here. Is it possible to change the navigation method in a course, dependent on how a user responds to a question?
I would like to let the user click a button early on in a course to decide whether they want to view the course "free style" (hopping around) or in sequential mode for credit (only going to the next slide via use of the next button).
I know this can be set in the player prior to publishing, but would like to trigger a variable to change it based on the user's preference. So for example if the user wants to skip around, set the slide navigation to free. If the user wants to go one slide a time, set it to restricted.
I don't want to go to the trouble of creating a custom menu.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim and welcome to Heroes!
You won't be able to change the player's behavior based on a variable, so a custom menu would be one way. You could also set up the course to "branch" to a different set of slides who have different behavior, here's an explanation of what that would look like:
1. Slide one, choose to navigate freely or continue sequentially by picking one of two buttons.
2. Freely navigate brings you to Scene 2 that contains all the slides, where the menu has been enabled on each slide using the "Custom player setup" within the slide properties. You can set the navigation method for the menu to freely and the users will be able to jump around using the menu (or the prev/next buttons if you include them).
3. Continue sequentially takes you to scene 3 where the menu is not enabled on each slide using the "Custom player set up" and the user only has the previous/next buttons to navigate.
Since you mentioned credit, I assume there may be a quiz or information reported to the LMS? You may want to set up the tracking by a quiz slide/results slide instead of total number of slides visited.
Thank you, Ashley! I have to admit it feels wasteful to me to duplicate all the slides for this, but I think it should work well and is a better solution than creating a custom menu. Hopefully there won't be any runtime issues with twice as many pages.
Hi Tim,
It is a bit more work, and will add to the size of your course. How that will impact runtime is going to depend on the overall size and the users connected when playing the course.
You're also welcome to share your thoughts about updating the navigation based on user's selection in the form of a feature request if you'd like.
Thanks Ashley!
