You can create a series of states for your character and have the state changes triggered by some off-screen objects.
In the attached, I have 4 off-screen shapes that are set to appear one after the other 0.25 seconds apart. I have then added triggers to change the state of my on-screen character when the timeline of each shape (NOT the slide) starts.
