changing character makes character jump left (non base layers)

Using a placeholder character, I built out a module - multiple layers per slide. My in-house voice talent is set and she and I have selected a character closer to what she looks like. As I am moving though my layers, I am selecting the character and then selecting the new character. And, each time I exchange on a non-base layer, the new character jumps to the left. Always noticeable, but, sometimes it's a bigger jump, sometimes smaller.

Would love to perform straight exchanges rather than have to rebuild all the layers by copying and pasting from the base.
