Sure is, Jill. Probably several ways to do it. If the desired state change coincides with the appearance of some object on the timeline, simply add a trigger to that object that says "change state of blah-blah to whatever when the timeline starts".
If no such object exists, create one, but place it off to the side of the slide (that way it won't visually appear). Then position it on the timeline where you wish the state change to occur.
