Is there a way to have several videos on one slide but have which video is played determined by a variable? I can only get the video that is closest to the top to show in my project. I think the best option would be to change the state of the videos that I do not want to play, but it doesn't seem like changing video states is possible. I only want 1 video to play not all of them.

You could try adding the videos to separate layers and then display a layer based on the variable.
