character pose on base layer conflict with other layers

I have a base layer with characters in poses that are different from subsequent layers. When the layers get triggered the characters grow additional arms. 

I chose to show objects on the base layer so I could have objects with triggers from the base layer available on the other layers. 

What do you recommend I do for making the characters not show up with extra limbs?

I would also be tempted to build this just a little differently, putting all my character poses into image states on the base layer and just using the slide layers for the different text boxes. Include triggers on each slide layer setting the correct character states.

One of the things I love about SL... so many ways to do just about anything.
