Characters displaying differently within the same slide?

Hi all, 

I'm using some special characters in my course (in this case, a trophy character in Segoe UI Symbol) and am having strange results when I try to add them in different places. 

It renders fine in a number of places, including in the top right of this layout (this is in Preview),  but if I place it anywhere else it suddenly doesn't render correctly (see the three <?> icons). 

Using Storyline 3. Any thoughts about how to correct this? It was working fine until a crash, and now any new instance of the symbol will not render properly. 

UPDATE: Even copying old instances of the symbol works, until I edit the text box it's in in any way. This is bizarre.
