Chrome and Storyline Not Playing Nicely Together

Jun 20, 2018

When Chrome updated their software it didn't work nicely with Storyline 2. My course has an exam with 100 questions. After the update, the question numbers skip. For example, it should go in numerical order of 1 out of 50, 2 out of 50, etc. Now, it only displays the odd numbers. 1 out 50, 3 out 50, 5 out of 50, etc.

Has anyone else experience this? If so, were you able to fix it?

Hi Tika,

That's really strange! I haven't come across an issue like this one, so I'm glad you reached out.

Would you be able to share a sample of your file so I can see how you set it up? I'd also like to test both the Flash and HTML5 outputs in Chrome to see if there's a difference.

You can attach that sample file to a new reply here. Thanks!

Eric Allen

Yes!  I have experienced exactly this.

Chrome, and no other browsers that I'm aware of, now SKIPS numbers in my exams.  No matter what I do, no matter what setting I change, I cannot get it to suddenly not skip.

so, if I have 10 questions, the first time through, I get all 10 questions, and all 10 are graded appropriately, but if I choose to retake the exam, it goes back and goes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, then grades.  If I hit "review", it shows all 10 in the review, but it shows that I did not answer 2,4,6,8,10.   Mind you, these quizzes don't allow advancing if they are unanswered, so somehow, in Chrome, they are never even being pulled up, they are somehow just magically being skipped over.  Again, just in Chrome.  No other browsers do this to me.

If I do a browser refresh and just reload the exam from the browser, I will get 10 questions again, but Chrome is somehow managing to do some form of a question skip, unless I do a browser refresh.

This did not used to be the case, but it is now.   Please Help!

ok I feel fairly confident in saying that this is an HTML5 issue, versus a "chrome" issue.  Chrome has simply started playing our content in HTML5 by default which caused me to think it was just a Chrome thing initially.

I'm currently forcing HTML5 and every single time I "retake exam" it only gives me half of the questions, it skips every other question, like it's incrementing twice to display the next question.

This only happens in HTML5, as any instance in flash works fine, I "retake exam" and it resets the results and starts me back over with x number of random questions, displayed in proper order, no skipping every other question or incrementing twice, however we want to phrase it.

Also, I am using Storyline 2.

This is extremely odd.   So This works totally fine even in HTML5 and Chrome, no question skipping after clicking the "retake exam" button IF I publish with the menu in "Free" mode.

If I publish with the menu in "Restricted" mode, even progressing through the slides in exactly the same manner, all the same clicks, everything, when I hit "retake exam", My questions skip... 1, 3, 5,... etc.

"Free" vs "Restricted" Publish, all other things being equal, including how I progress through the published file... this is what causes it to skip exam questions when I click "retake exam"

Hi Eric,

It sounds odd, and I'm sure has your head spinning! I had a few other questions to help narrow this down:

  • What update of Storyline 2 are you using? You can check by going to the "Help" Tab -> "About Articulate Storyline." The latest is Update 13.
  • What version of Chrome are you running?
  • How are you forcing the HTML5 output?
  • Are you hosting in a web server or LMS?
  • Are your quiz questions standalone or being drawn from a question bank?
  • Do your quiz questions include feedback or are there no feedback until the Review portion?

That information will help me narrow down what may be happening, so I'll be here when you're able to share an update!

Eric Allen

Hi Ashley, thanks for reaching out.

Here are the answers to your questions.

1) I'm using Update 12: 1705.520

2) I'm using the standard publish, I'm not currently forcing HTML5 output.   However it appears that the latest version of Chrome (Version 69.0.3497.92 (Official Build) (32-bit)) is going straight to HTML5.   I have since learned that if I do force it to HTML5 output by bypassing the "if" condition in the index_html file, the same results happen in all browsers, in HTML5.  No issues in Flash.

3) This happens both in my local publish and it also happens in our SCORM compliant LMS.

4) The quiz questions are being drawn from a question bank.

5) There is no feedback until the review portion.

Also, I do have 2 small "sample files", both stories and/or published which I could provide .   Basically the only difference between these files is that If I change the "restricted/free" setting in the "Menu" options, that is the difference between this happening and not.

In my "Free" publish, the "retake exam" button works flawlessly in HTML5 and Flash both, presents the proper amount of questions on the retake..

If I go in and simply change that value to "Restricted", then the "retake exam" button then brings me back into the question skipping, and only provides every other question.. (though they show up as "unanswered" if I click "review Exam"

I hope that helps.   I just can't wrap my mind around why this one setting is somehow the difference between functioning as expected, or not.

Thanks, Eric. That's all the information I needed!

First, I'd always recommend updating to the latest update (Update 13 for Storyline 2), especially if you'll be using Chrome as your main browser as it has changed how they handle autoplay of media and Update 13 has a fix in place for that.

Next, it looks like you've hit a bug our team is investigating where not all questions in a question bank are shown upon Retry quiz if your navigation is Restricted and no you don't have feedback per question slide. This also only happens in the HTML5 output.

I'll keep you posted here if we have any updates, but in the meantime, your learners could exit and then relaunch the course to see all questions and retake it OR you can set feedback per question slide.

Also, it doesn't appear that this same issue has carried into Storyline 3 or Storyline 360.

Eric Allen

Thanks Ashley, yeah that pretty much nails it.  I had previously allowed for a reloading of the content, which resolves the issue, but doing it via a button uses javascript which a couple of our external customers are having a hard time with across domains, so I had hoped just keeping them inside of the section (and not having to resume) would do the trick.

I have two small samples, one with restricted and one with free.  If anyone there would like them, and see how the publishes change that, let me know.  But it sound like you all know exactly what I'm referring to already.

Thanks, Eric for the offer of more examples! We're always happy to have them in case it reveals something else, but I think this is one our team has a handle on what's causing it. The combination of a Question bank +restricted navigation + No Question feedback + HTML5. It sounds like you're able to change the navigation, have you looked at modifying any of the other components?

Eric Allen

We're looking into it.  There are options we are looking at like, using free mode wile disabling buttons for duration of the timeline, individual quiz slide responses, etc... but so far each still gives us a functionality that we don't really want.   Still messing with it.  We are evaluating 360 again as well, which also does a few things with our training which we don't care for, but we're getting there.
