Click submit button to check drop item has hit target

Oct 28, 2014

Hi there,

I'm trying to make an interaction that requires the user to click on a location on a map prehaps by moving a drag and drop item, and upon clicking a submit button, feedback is given as to whether they have clicked the right location. I'm not sure how to do this, its a bit different from the usual drag item to target item, there is only one drag item and one target and the target is invisible. The purpose of the game is to test geography knowledge which is why having the feedback upon a custom submit button is ideal rather than them hunting around until they hit the correct target. Then if they have clicked the target, feedback says they are correct and if they havn't, feedback could branch to a slide showing the correct location. I'm not sure if this is possible in Storyline, any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Claire

Hi Claire,

Can you explain a bit more (or maybe someone else will reply who has a better understanding). I'm not getting why the standard D&D won't work?

  • Let' say you have a map, as in the example, a U.S. map
  • The question is to drag the "locator object" onto a state, as in the example, the state of Colorado
  • The state is covered with a hotspot, so the target is invisible, which you've stated above

So, you have a target: the hotspot. You have a drag item: the locator object

If Learners drag/drop the item correctly and click Submit, they see the Correct response. If they drag/drop incorrectly, they arrive at the Incorrect layer, and could be directed to Click continue to Jump to the next slide (or wherever the information slide is) and see the correct answer (or you can change this with triggers to jump directly to the slide; or you change the incorrect layer to provide the correct information. Lots of options).

You could do all that with a standard D&D. BUT, you've mentioned a Custom Submit button so they don't need to hunt around. That's what I'm not getting.

Anyway, here's a (really rough) baseline. Perhaps you can explain from here?

Thanks Rebecca,

I think one of the issues I've just seen is I have an old version of Storyline which I cannot update due to an old operating system (when clicking on check for updates it just says no updates available), so unfortunalty I couldn't open your file or install the latest version.

I'm hoping to get a new windows 8 computer soon but its it depends on the I.T people. I have also seen there is Storyline 2 out now which may have the functionality I need, but right now I can't test that either due to my ancient operating system! I'll get back to you when I have the new computer and will be hopefully able to update Storyline and open your file.

Thanks for you help.

Hi Claire,

Just saw your reply. That story was created in SL2. Just threw it together again quickly in SL1. Even though you don't have the latest SL1, I think you'll be able to open this.

Hope the IT people can provide you with a newer computer. Do you have Windows and still have XP? If so, I think you're right about SL2 not being an option for you. Still, maybe you can work with Articulate support to see if you CAN have the latest SL1 update.
