Clicking back from a feedback layer without resetting to initial state of base layer

Sep 27, 2017

Hi,

I am building an online course in Articulate Storyline 360 that includes various multiple choice questions as well as other interactions.

It has been requested by the customer that they'd like to be able to navigate back to the interaction, in this case a multiple choice question, from the feedback layer.

I have added a back button onto the feedback layer which jumps back to the base layer with the interaction.

My issue is that when it jumps back, it will not let me submit the interaction again to continue through the course. So far the only way I have found to do this is changing the base layer to 'reset to initial state' when revisiting.

I'm concerned that this will become irritating for the user, if they just clicked back to reread something but now have to re-answer the question in order to progress.

Is there any way it is possible to go back without resetting the base layer to its initial state?

I have attached a screencast of me trying to go back from the feedback layer, the base layer resuming at its saved state, and trying (but failing) to click Submit and continue.

 Thanks in advance,

Sian

Hi Sian, thanks for including the video! That helped me better understand what's going on in your file.

It looks like you're using custom buttons, as opposed to the built-in ones generated by Storyline. I'd like to have a closer look at the triggers you've set up--mind sharing your file with me?

If it contains sensitive information that you'd rather not share publicly, you can "Save As" to create a copy of the course. Then, remove all but one question slide, and replace the text with "dummy text". You can attach the file here in a new thread comment.

I'll be standing by!

Hi Alyssa,

Thanks for your reply.

I've attached a copy with just that slide in. It's currently configured the same as it was when I took that screencast.

I know that I can get it to go back to the base layer if I set it to reset to initial state. I just want to know if I can get it to resume the saved state but then still let me continue through the course by clicking Submit.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Sian,

If you want to use the "Resume Saved State" setting, you won't be able to click the submit button again, since the question is already submitted. I have another idea for you, though!

Try changing the state of the next button to Normal when the user clicks the Submit button. That way, the user can use the next button to navigate forward to the next slide. Here's the trigger set up:

Will that work for what you're looking to do?
