Closed captioning and embedded videos

May 18, 2020

I have a course I'm trying to build that has a video and below the video are two choices for the learner.   Unfortunately, this places the closed caption button and the captions far away from the video, over my option, and breaks my 508 compliance test.  Is there any way to attach the closed caption box to a video so it shows at the bottom of the video like it does when you watch TV?  I really don't want to have to advance to another page to display the choices.  I also don't want to have to generate two versions of the video, one with closed captions edited on top the video and another with them off.    The play button and timeline is already attached to the video so I was surprised when the closed captioning was not.  Suggestions?

Hi Sharon!

Thank you for attaching the screenshot!

By default, the closed captions will be attached to the bottom of a slide. As you mentioned, they are displayed the same way as television would display closed captions.

Since this is a standard set-up, we don't currently offer a feature for authors to determine where the closed captions will be displayed.

After looking at your screenshot, I created a course that takes a different approach. I've created a short screen recording to explain how I built the course. Here's the link.

I've also attached the .story file to this reply in case you want to test it on your end!

Thanks,
That's a possibility, just not the most optimum one since it takes the user away from the content they're answering the question about. Also, I've gotten dinged on the fact that in the Modern player if you have the volume control on and the closed caption control on, the closed caption comes before the volume control in the tab order, but visual comes after the volume control. I didn't see a way to chance tab order in the player, which leads me to another question. Can I make my own player skin with the buttons where I want them, or am I stuck with the current layout?

Thanks again, I appreciate your great customer support. I'm hoping this will work out and help our project instead of us having to custom program everything.

Hi Sharon!

I understand! That example does take learners away from the video they are answering questions about.

I'm not seeing the closed captioning appear after the volume control. Are you seeing a delay when activating the closed captioning icon?

Here's what it looks like on my end:

There isn't a built-in feature for moving the buttons in the Player. Here's a great resource that explains all the changes you can make to Player! Link
