Completion Tracking and Quiz Results

Dec 10, 2013

Hello,

I have a unique request from a client and I'm not sure if their request is possible. I want to be able to track a learner as complete if they've launched the program. But I also want to track a results slide. Is this possible?

I am already using the publish settings to track a results slide that I have in the program, and that works fine. I have also tried tracking under  the criteria that one slide is viewed, but as I expected, the results slide was not tracked. But the client would like all who launches the program to be reported as passed as well having their quiz results tracked.

Please let me know if this is something that can be done. Thanks.

Hi Keith:

I have set slide views required to 1, then went back and set the publishing for SCORM 1.2 to Passed/Incomplete and it allows you to have incomplete and provide a passed grade.

Will that work for your client.

If not, you could insert a Javascript call (trigger) in slide one that would trigger the Finalize() (_Finish) function using var player = GetPlayer();

Hi Keith:

You are describing 2 separate statuses in your question as follows:

1. Can  a user get a completed after only viewing 1 slide in many. Yes. The Slides views number can be set when you set the tracking for that. SL will pass the "completed" cmi data to your LMS when the user exits the course.

2. Can a user get a Pass é Fail and Score status for one of more quiz questions. Yes. The Pass/Fail status is set in the respective Publish settings. SL will pass the "SetScore" cmi data to your LMS when the use exits the course.

Now, after setting items 1 and 2 respectively, leave the SCORM 1.2 publish settings that way and publish for Pass / Incomplete. If this does not allow you users to only view 1 slide to gain a Completed status, AND complete quiz questions to gain a Pass/Fail status, you should verify that your LMS can comply with these settings.

I understand what you are trying to accomplish, but admittedly, I do not understand how you can do this, since Quiz questions are limited to 1 question per slide (meaning it is not possible to Pass and exam if you have an exam with multiple quiz questions).

In short, the settings will work, but not all LMS platforms will allow for this, so check with the LMs vendor.

If you find your LMS cannot do this, then refer to the JavaScript item I mentioned in my first post.

I'm sorry if I missed something, Dennis. Thanks again for your help, but I'm not sure I understand the bottom line. I'm trying to find out for our client if both of the following things are possible for their program: 1) a complete status for all who launch the program and 2) quiz score tracked.

It seems to me like these two things cannot be achieved, so our client said they are willing to settle for just item 1: completion for all who launch the program, i.e., minimum slides viewed set to one. But know they are saying the SCORM package I sent them with minimum slides for completion set to 1 still doesn't show up as complete, regardless of the settings on their end.

So at this point, I would just like to know how to get all their learners a completion. I'm out of ideas.

Hi Keith,

If the course is not setting to complete within their LMS, you may want to first review these troubleshooting steps for LMSs.  Specifically, I'd try testing it at SCORM Cloud to check the completion status.

Thanks Ashley. I forgot about that link.

This is also in line with my suggestion that the LMs is not playing fun with Keith and the ability to provide a completion status the way they want it to. "In short, the settings will work, but not all LMS platforms will allow for this, so check with the LMs vendor."

All I want now, as per the client''s suggestion, is a complete for a designated percentage. If they are as stumped as we are, that's okay. But the support team hasn't even responded to me. No one in my office finds it plausible that I haven't been given a solution to the problem we actually have. We are losing thousands of dollars per day and are very dissatisfied with not having received a support or community answer. We are days into our inquiry. If it can't be answered, that''s fine. But we need to know if we should search other alternatives. Is there anyone out there?

Hi Keith,

I see your Support case (# 00374136 for my reference) and I see that it's been assigned to Jonathan.  If you're looking for a completion status based solely on meeting a percentage you'll want to track your results slide and report that to your LMS as described here.

As you didn't mention what LMS you were working in, I included the links on troubleshooting steps for LMS   and ensuring that it works as expected in SCORM Cloud to determine if it's an LMS issue or within your course.

Since you've opened a Support case, we'll be able to test your Storyline file as well.

Hi Keith,

I saw that after some work with Jonathan, he confirmed that:

that all quizzes tracked by the End Results Slide will need to be visited or taken (not necessarily passed). So each quiz whose Result Slide is tracked by the End Result Slide should be visited.

Additionally, he's recommend that this piece of information be added to appropriate support article.

Hope that helped, and let us know if you need anything else!
