Configuring a Reset on a Drag and Drop Activity

Feb 13, 2017

Hello all,

I just had to do some troubleshooting to get a Drag and Drop activity to function properly, and it was quite an effort! I thought I would share with you how I did it in case you have issues with something like this as well.

I had a Drag and Drop activity that basically used hot spots and png's. It had multiple layers for Correct, Incorrect, and Try Again. I wanted it to only allow two tries, then to show the Incorrect layer that listed the correct answers and had a Next button to advance to the next slide after the activity. I also had the slide set to "Reset to Initial State". The problem was that every time it reset, it couldn't comprehend what attempt it was on, and became a loop. I tried setting triggers with Conditions, but that didn't fix it either. So here's what I did....

I created a duplicate slide. On the first slide, I added a "Reset" button that had a trigger to Jump to the Next slide when the user clicked it. The first slide had the layers Correct and Try Again. The second slide had an additional layer called Incorrect that had a Continue button set to show a layer that listed the correct answers. That additional layer (with the correct answers) had a Next button that advanced to the next slide.

I know what you're thinking.....well that makes it show as two slides in the Menu when publishing. Actually, no. You can adjust the Menu in the Player settings to delete the second slide attempt. So it only shows the one slide in the menu when you publish.

So that's what I did. I hope this makes sense to you. I had to think outside of the box to make it work.

Hi Shelley! Thanks for sharing that solution with us. It sounds like you spent quite a bit of time figuring that out, so hopefully sharing the steps here will save other folks time in the future. :)

I know resetting a drag and drop interaction is a popular question in the forums, so I might suggest that you add "Drag-and Drop Reset" to your title to make it easier for others to find!
