Connecting up dots on storyline 2

Dec 14, 2015

Hello,

I am trying to build a life pattern in Storyline 2. Users will be able to drag and drop dots on a timeline to record key milestones in their personal life.

I would like to check if there is any tool that can allow me to connect up the dots that the user dragged to draw a life pattern. Has anyone done something like that before?

Are we talking about dots in a straight line?  Or, if not a straight line, would you have kind of preset paths laid out for the user to drag and drop their life events to?

If your life event placement is random, I don't think that you'll be able to connect your dots.

With a little bit of guidance for your users, however, such as having them place their life events along a specific path for your timeline, you can very easily connect dots.

You will need to have all of your lines predrawn, and set to "hidden" as their default state.

Whenever you're ready to connect the dots you will have a trigger that changes their state to "normal".  If you apply something like a simple "wipe" animation, it will appear as if the lines are being drawn.

If you need the life timeline to have ups and downs that the user dictates, this can be done but will require extra work:

  1. For example, for life step #2, let's imagine you have three different placements for a life event, we'll call them high (point), middle and low (point).  Your user can place their life event at one of these three places at that juncture of their lifeline.
  2. You'll have to set the value of a variable based on where they place their life event: step2Hi, step2Mid and step2Low.
  3. You'll have three lines drawn from step #1 to step #2.  Based on the value of your variable value for step 2, you'll trigger the appropriate line's state to "normal" and draw it to connect that dot.

Make sense? Obviously, the less flexibility you give the user, the easier your development.  the more flexibility the more complex your development will be.

If I get time I may mock up an example and attached to this thread...
