Constant Crashing

Apr 14, 2014

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project and overall, it is going well.  However, I CONSTANTLY have problems with Storry line crashing 99 times out of 100 it is because I "previewing" it in the timeline rather than through the actual full screen preview.  I'm doing this, so I can align the timing of various items for the course.

By the way- yes the project is save to the computer and not a network or external drive.

ANY help is GREATLY appreciated

Hi there Michele,

Sorry to hear about the crashing! Hopefully we can figure out what's happening.

You mentioned you're working locally, that's great. Can you tell me a little about the file names and paths you're using?

  • Make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Please make sure you're running the most recent version of Storyline. Articulate Storyline Update 5 includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and HTML5 output enhancements. Click here for details.

If you still have trouble with this, it may help to run a quick repair:

Articulate Support - How to Repair Articulate Storyline

If running the repair does not solve the problem, please try following the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:

Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in Articulate Storyline

Let me know if you see any improvement.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. It's just with one file so I figured the file must have been corrupt. My naming convention was fine, my file was on my hard drive, and the file was in the same folder as dozens of other Storyline files I have created, edited, previewed, and published without incident.

After I started completely recreating the file from scratch (no copy/paste from one file to another) and a few slides in I started having the same problem as I had with the previous file. I started only with Storyline elements so I could determine if one of my outside images had a problem, so all I had in the presentation was a large number of characters (some grouped, others not--all including animated), textboxes, and Storyline captions.

When I saved some of the character groups as PNGs and replaced the characters with images, the crashing because less frequent. Is there any way the characters, grouping, or animation could be causing the crashing upon previewing? It also didn't matter whether I used the timeline play button or the whole-screen preview button. Please help.

Yep. I reinstalled SL1 again yesterday. I've been talking with Ashley Terwilliger on another post about the problem. I've done all of the SL1 repairs and only have this problem with one of the files I've created. It's really strange. There aren't many differences between my perfectly-functioning files and this one aside from a couple of minor differences. I have several characters on some of the slides, but unlike other presentations, I have some of them grouped. I also have the slides auto advance rather than having the user advance them. Aside from those things, I can't see any differences. What have others with this problem done to alleviate it?
