Continuing editing of a text entry

Dec 05, 2012

I am creating a course where I want the end user to generate some thinking of their own in an original text entry. Then throughout the course, I want them to re-visit their entry, each time editing as they go. Each time it shows up for re-edit, I want their text displayed with  the previous edits (or ALL of the previous edits) included. Likely there is a way to do this but I'm not quite sure how. Ideas, anyone?

Hi Toni,

You need to insert the name of the variable in your text entry box. I have tried it with the Variable TextEntry and entered %TextEntry% in the field and it works for me. The downside is that the first time the user gets to that box, it is written %TextEntry% in the field but it is quite easy to write over it.

Hope it helps and have a nice day!

Thanks, Annie. I must still be missing something. I have used the variable for Text Entry before, for instance for a name that I want to appear over and over again throughout the course. But in this case, that's all that I can get to happen - the original entry reposts. I want the original text to not only reappear when called up, but to be editable. Then I want those edits to be carried through so that the next time it is called up, it will appear with edits and be editable again, and so on and so on. The end result should be the text in final edited form.

Also, I am presuming it should work through preview as I think it always has. I have NOT published and tried it that way. Thanks for persisting with me. No doubt user error but I am still stuck on it!

Hope you had a great day as well!

Hi Toni,

It is editable but I have to admit that it isn't all that easy. I have been able to edit it by pressing the "end" button while the text entry repost is selected. You would need to add extra explanations to tell them how to edit their post. Depending on the need you could easily add the information on each slide where the field appear, or, if you put it on a lightbox slide (for example) that is available through the whole course, the information would be always available.

Hope it helps and don't hesitate to post back if you need further information.

Have a nice day!

Annie,

Got it! It actually was't that tough, but was, as predicted, user error on my part. I was starting with the original Text Entry Variable, and then I was using "Reference" so I couldn't acutally edit. When I went to Text Entry Variable instead for the repeated slides, it all worked like a charm. And there are no %xxxx% type things showing up at all. It just shows up with the first edits, then they edit again and it shows up with the second edits, etc - just exactly the way I want it to. All you have to do is drag over the last post, and it highlights it, and you can then edit. Oh - in the very first Text Entry Variable box, you can change the wording to whatever you want so it doesn't have to look like some sort of code on the user end.

Thanks for spiraling my thinking! Love this community! They have helped me out several times. I am doing a first project and it is intense and lots of programming in it - takes me back to when I taught high school math and we programmed graphing calculators. But it is wonderful to have a community of support for stumpers!

Again, thanks,

Toni

Hi Guys,

I really need help with this. I'm having the same problem as Toni, but am so new, I can't follow and don't know where to begin. I have placed a number of text entry boxes on different slides that I need users to be able to continuously reference and update. but on each new page, the text they enter does not show up. Any help would be very appreciated.

Hi Spencer,

In fact, you need to use the name of your text entry field as a variable in the following text entry field.

So, let's say that on the first slide your text entry field is named "TextEntry" (look at your variable list to use the good name - the variable list is available at the bottom of the trigger panel, it is the small x ).

In the second text entry field, you enter in Edit mode %TextEntry%.

If you try it in preview, you will see that the text you enter in the first text entry field will be reposted in the second one. As I said in a previous message, to edit it, you must press the "end" button while in the field.

Hope this can help you get started.

Have a nice day and welcome to Heroes!

Hi Spencer,

When talking about "edit mode", I mean when editing the slide.

About your text not appearing on the second slide, have you made sure that you are using the right name for your text entry field?

Can you post your .story file or part of it here so we can take a look at it? (by the way, when uploading a file in the forum, you don't see it adding to the thread as long as you don't post the reply)

Have a nice day!

Annie
