Controlling the learners' progress and experience

Apr 13, 2020

Hi! I'm new to Storyline 360 and there are a couple of functions I've been trying to figure out. I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me out.

1) How should I create a seamless experience as if it is actually one seamless screen (rather than several slides)?

2) Is there a way for me to make sure that learners see and access the slides only up to the point that they have completed? This is to prevent them from jumping to the next slide without reading or completing the activity from the slide they were on.

3) How do I make sure the learners watch the inserted/uploaded videos completely without skipping any parts? (They shouldn't be able to jump to the end of the video, they have to watch the whole thing)

Hi Jean,

The way I would attack this is as follows:

1)  I would create / import a suitable template for the course. By having certain objects, such as a logo, image or block of colour in the same place on each slide, will ensure that these items are always visible irrespective of whatever else appears on the screen. This helps to trick the eye into believing that all the other changes are occurring on the one slide and gives a seamless appearance to your course. It also ensures the corporate look, which generally looks more professional.

2)  I would disable the Previous and Next buttons on each slide until the timeline completes for the slide. This ensures that all the content must be viewed before the user can advance to the next slide. I would also avoid using a menu in the Player so that the user cannot select another slide.

3)  I would disable the Seekbar in the Player so that the user cannot jump ahead in the video. I would also add a 100% transparent rectangle over the top of the video so that the user cannot select the video and cause it to pause. If you want this option available, I would enable the Play / Pause option in the Player.

Hope this helps, but if you are having problems with how to implement any of this, just give me a shout here.

Hi, Jean,

The simplest way to disable the NEXT button until the timeline ends is to set the Menu to Restricted navigation. Restricted navigation also keeps the NEXT button enabled if the user revisits a slide. This function works whether you do or don't show the menu to the users.

Restricted navigation by itself doesn't force a user to finish an interaction. To do that, you do need to add your triggers using conditions and variables. I highly recommend that you take the time to go through the Articulate user guide/tutorials to learn more about conditions and variables, because they provide the real power.
