Here's a possible other way to do this without adding additional layers.

1. Add a 1 second silent audio file.

2. Set trigger to play audio on timeline start

3. Set trigger to add 1 to variable when media completes.

4. Set trigger to play media with media completes.

It's not fancy, but it counts up.  You could then do some work with that variable to figure out how many seconds, minutes, etc if you wanted to.

set the variables of minutes & seconds in the References, insert a count-sound if you like and go.

Roman, I even said in my screenr there must be a better way of doing this, nice elegant solution thanks for sharing

Is it possible to have this timer display either above the menu on the side bar or on the top bar?

Layer 4 ("ENDE") is shown when the timer runs out. Here you can add the trigger you want.

I haven't tried to use the countdown in a quiz - can't help you in this case yet.

There is already a built in timer for quizzes I would try and use that, if not it should work fine 

So I thought I'd help out and deposit this layer free timer. I stole Jeremy's brilliant media idea and made it work.

The issue I was having is that you can't have a layer based timer on a slide that has more than one scrolling panel, since the panels are unable to be hidden, except by using layers. So if i wanted to use tabs (which i do) to switch between scrolling panels, I couldn't use the scrolling widget because the top layer is ALWAYS visible, so the widget underneath was covered up. 

So here's a layer free version of a timer. Go into the variables and set minuteInitial + second1Initial + second2Initial to what you want displayed at the start.

Feel free to drop some knowledge on me if there's a better way to do it!
