Counter layer

Hello,
I have created a layer called "time" that works as a counter in my slide. Also, I have 4 interacting drop down (not built in, I have created them), each with its corresponding layer (see attached photo). The problem is whenever I click on the drop down to choose the answer, the counter stops counting . In the time layer, I have 3 triggers (Adding 1 to the timer5 variable when timeline starts, Showing and hiding this layer when timeline ends).
Does anyone knows why is this happening and how to solve?
Thank you in advance,

Hi Dany,
It looks like both your timer and your drop downs are on layers. When you select the bottom layer, the layer above it stops running. Try moving your timer below your dropdown layers. This may allow the timer to continue to run.
Hi Mr. Dave,
I tried it, but it didn't work, the same problem.
Thank you,
The issue then is you can't play both layers at the same time. Sorry, but I don't think that is going to work. Maybe someone else will have a better solution for you.
Thank you :)
I tried to use Javascript. I created a boolean variable and assign it to "False". When I click on the next button it becomes true. In the script I put a while loop testing that variable, but the loop is not working in the script. I read a post said that looping is not supported in storyline javascript.
Hi Dany,
It depends on what you mean by "Loop." You can perform loop operations in javascript, even with storyline. The issue is, you can't continuously run javascript in the background to keep updating something in Storyline.
By default, when one layer shows, it hides all other layers. If you deselect this option, the timer layer can continue to run, but it comes at a cost. You will need to create triggers to hide (for example,) the second layer when you show the third.
Or you could put the timer on the base slide, like this example, which will run as long as the timeline on the base layer isn't stopped.
Or, you could attach your .story file, and someone could look at it and give you some ideas that are specific to what you are trying to do.
One more option: You could try adding the timer functionality to the Question layout (one of the slider master layouts).
Hi,
Mr. Dave i realized that the loop in javascript is a while loop (while(end==false)), so it is as a continuous running of a javascript and updating a variable and that will not work.Thank you Mr. Walt for the attached file, that worked with me. Adding the timer functionality to the Question layout is also a good idea, it also worked with me thank you Michael.
Have a good day,
Hello,
Is there a way to take the elapsed time appeared at the top right corner of the quiz and set it into a variable? (see attached photo).
If no, is there a way to know the elapsed time taken by the user in the quiz.
Thank you in advance :)
There is no option to access the built-in quiz timer through a variable. You could create your own timer though. Here is a thread that discusses options.
Thank you Mr. Michael :)
Hello,
I am facing a problem with the audio sound in my storyline. I have added in the slide Master an audio. When I changed the audio, the old one still playing. After all, I have deleted all what I added in the slide master, so that no more audio exists in the project. But I was shocked that the sound still exist why?? I checked again the file and no audio file exists in it, but when I preview it, the sound is playing. Can anyone help me please?
Hi Dany
can you share your .story file and let people know which audio is the one that shouldn't be playing - just use the grey 'add attachement' button at the bottom of the post to upload.
Hi,
Here is the file. I have no audio in it, but if you preview it, you can here a sound when the timeline of each slide starts. I didn't understand the source of that audio. I have deleted it and restarted storyline, but nothing changed, the sound still existed. How can I remove it? What is the solution for that?
Thank you,
Hi Dany
there is an audio clip on the slide and also on the slide master 16 layout - delete both clips and that and the sound will be gone.
Hi wendy,
Thank you so much, I have been working for a long time, so i didn't pay attention for these two. I checked slide masters and all slides but I missed these. Now it worked, no sound.
Thank you :)
Great news Dany - glad you're all sorted now. Good luck with your project!
