Course Cost Question

Sep 29, 2020

Wondering if anyone has experience with rates for splitting a course. I'm working with a client who has asked to split 3-hour long course into 4 smaller courses. My thought is to charge a 10% split charge for each split. So for a $6k course, $600 per split to total $1800. Any thoughts out there on if this seems over, under, just right? I have not done this so not sure if the amount will really equal the time and labor to do it--I'll need to do new intros, exit slides, titling, player options, etc. Will be a learning experience either way. Any feedback appreciated.

Hi Carly,

I don't think there is a magic formula here as projects vary greatly. I can give you advice on the things you'll need to consider, but it will be down to your hourly rate, and how long you think it will take you to complete. Consider other factors (on top of the dev work of just splitting):

  1. Will the module need to be reviewed to determine if instructions need to change (referring to content that is no longer part of the module). Ensure time is given to this, either by yourself or the client.
  2. Will you need to review an Menus and update links throughout the content?
  3. Will you need to consider any changes to tracking such as completion triggers, assessments?
  4. Always include time for testing. This can vary based on devices (mobile, tablet, desktop)/browsers (IE, Chrome, Saf) that the client needs to confirm the content works and tracks on. Include plenty of time for this and make the client aware you are including time for it.
  5. Include enough time for edit + review cycles, I always go with three reviews. The first may bring up a few issues not considered and could include fairly significant work, the second review should not be significant, and the third should be one or two items at the most and sign-off.

I hope that helps with some things to consider.

Cheers,
Sam
