Course data resets when revisiting completed course

Sep 03, 2014

Hi,

We have a course made up of 6 modules (separate scorm packages)

We have an issue where the user would complete a module, obtain a score and this would be registered on the LMS.

When they revisit this module, on 3 out of 5 of the modules, it resets all of the data held and goes back to the beginning of the course with all variables wiped. This then resets the status on the LMS to incomplete and score of 0.

I believe this could be down to the LMS but it works fine on 2 of the modules.

I have tried this on SCORM cloud and this is fine.

Does anyone have any fixes for this or advice on how to move this forward.

Thanks, Andy

May be the LMS, it may be related to scorm resume limit (but I don't think that would reset the status. If you are using Scorm 1.2 I would test in Scormcloud and workout the length of the data that is being sent if it is over 4096 then likely it is being truncated by the LMS and that is the issue

You can set the Scorm to only improve the grade which should stop the overwrite but the loss of data is worrying.  Any chance the course is set to Force new attempt, or is entering review mode but the LMS is allowing an overwrite?

Hi Phil,

Thank you for your reply. How do you work out the length of the data in scorm cloud.

I'm not positive that all data is being lost but I have a variable inside called 'courseComplete - true/false'. When it reaches the last page then this sets as 'true' which shows the menu button. When everything gets reset, this courseComplete' shows as false, the course starts from page 1 and all results disapear. It is as if everything is reset and not being overwritten.... Thanks

If you upload the data and look at the logs you can see the suspend data, I normally copy that and use an online character counter to get the length (There may be an easier way but it works for me).

Often the resume data get truncated which can cause odd behaviour, not resuming on the page you expect it to is normally the first sign, this may not be the issue but if the course is not in review mode then the score can get overwritten.

What LMS are they using?

That is good, does it resume in Scormcloud?  If it does then it really starts to be an LMS issue.

I would double check the resume settings on the course (although if it resumes in scormcloud don't bother).  I have never used that LMS so may be worth posting a new post for that LMS.

Check what setting are enabled for the LMS, may be they have a force new attempt option that they have enabled, just really odd that some work and others don't.

Hi,

I realize this is an old thread but we seem to be experiencing an issue that when the learner completes the course and then revisits it again in the LMS it does not allow the user to jump around to a specific part of the course.

The course navigation is set to restricted so that first pass through they must move forward slide by slide. And when finished they can jump to where they would like. Has anyone else seen this recently? We are using Storyline 2.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am talking more specifically about a course that has been completed and not a course that is currently in progress. If it's the user's first attempt, and then they leave the course and come back it resumes state. If you complete the course, and then it reports back to the LMS as completed and then you open it up again it does not let you navigate throughout. Any thoughts?

I'm having a similar issue. In my LMS, I complete the course and it shows 100% completion. The moment I return to the course, however, it resets to 0%. I'm using SCORM 2004 3rd edition.

I don't receive the "Do you want to start where you left off" prompt after completing the course the first time. I receive it most of the way through, but not the whole way through. I tested in SCORM Cloud and got the prompt throughout the whole course.

The link Phil provided earlier in this thread no longer works, so I can't read up on character limits. I believe 2004 3rd ed has a 64000 character limit? When I look at my SCORM Cloud log, how do I determine the character limit of the Suspend data (or do I need to be looking for something else in the log)? I've never used the Debug Log and haven't found a helpful tutorial on it.

Thanks in advance!
