Course Navigation Problems

Feb 12, 2014

So, I'm having a bit of a problem with the "menu" function in the Storyline Player.  I believe I've tried all the available setting options to try to resolve this issue but have not been successful to this point and need some help.

I would like the player menu to provide navigation through our courses.  In other words, a course participant can click on a page title in the menu and jump directly to that slide.  With the "Navigation Restriction" set to "Free" the user can jump around anywhere in the course regardless of whether they have visited the selected page and it's not necessarily the next page in the flow.  This is exactly what I want and it works perfectly.

Here's what's happening though  ...  if a course participant jumps around in the menu from slide to slide by clicking on slide titles in the menu, the "Previous" button does not behave the way I would expect it to.  I would expect the previous/next buttons to follow the navigate flow of the course in order.  So if I was on slide 9 in the course, then jumped to slide 21 using the menu, I would expect the previous button to take me to slide 20.  Unfortunately, it appears that the previous button is using the browser history to determine which slide previous button is connected to.

So using this example, this is what is actually happening  ...  if I am on slide 9 and use the menu to jump to slide 21 then I click the previous button, it takes me back to slide 9 - - - what I want it to do is take me to slide 20.

I could add a navigation trigger to every slide to connect the previous button to the preceding slide, but that will be a long and tedious process.  I have 36 courses I'm working through creating and a great deal of time will be spent if I have to connect the slides in this fashion.

If it turns out that there is no simple answer to this problem, then I will simply "lock" the navigation, thus disallowing users to freely move around in the course.  I hope I don't have to resort to this.

I think this question/description is fairly clear.  Let me know if I need to clarify things further.

Thanks in advance!

You've answered your own question.  I've done this too many times to count and unless someone has a better option you'll need to add a trigger to each slide for the Next and Prev buttons.

Default functionality - i believe - is to navigate based on menu flow, not user flow. And, the only way I've found to fix this is by adding triggers to each slide.  I would recommend doing this at the very end though in case you add/remove slides.
